It's common for #parents to offer a "special" and often #unhealthy #food as a reward for good #behavior, or withholding those treats as a punishment. Using food as a reward or as a punishment can undermine the #healthy #eating habits that you're trying to teach your #children. Check out this article on alternative rewards and punishments! #HealthyKids http://www.stanfordchildrens.org/en/topic/default?id=why-parents-shouldnt-use-food-as-reward-or-punishment-160-32

The world is growing smaller. Through instant access on social media, global trade agreements, safe and efficient travel, and 24 hours news access, the world is growing smaller and we grow nearer to each other. Our neighbor is no longer just next door. Our neighbor is anyone. Therefore, it is paramount that we care for others, stand up for others, protect others. We must LOVE.

When Priority Care Pediatrics, LLC was founded over 10 years ago, it was founded on the principles to do whatever necessary to care for children, to nurture them, to work day and night to do everything within our power to keep them healthy and happy. At PCPeds, we still value and defend those principles.

No doubt, as parents you want only the best for children. Yours, ours, all of them. As pediatricians, that calling is paramount to everything we and our work family do. No matter a child’s background, religion, ethnicity, political upbringing, or family unit, they deserve the absolute best. Obviously, you cannot turn on the news or open your social media without viewing images of immigrant children being separated from their families. This breaks our heart and dulls our spirit. Shaped by love and the belief that we should do all in our power to create a brighter future for all children, it is necessary for us to speak out...take a stand...have our collective voice heard.

Yes, there are laws in place which are quite specific in nature and meaning and were voted on and approved by people from both sides of the political spectrum, background, and beliefs. While we understand that laws should be enforced, upheld, and followed, we cannot disagree more with immigrant families purposely being broken apart and children being taken from their parents and guardians.

The significance of removing a child from their loved ones is a damaging act. It is a sickening punishment for and to a child who has no say in the matter. Most significantly, it causes lifelong harm, including change in brain structure. The American Academy of Pediatrics states it best:

“[We urge] the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice to immediately end the policy of family separation. Separating children from their parents contradicts everything we stand for as pediatricians...We know that family separation causes irreparable harm to children. This type of highly stressful experience can disrupt the building of children’s brain architecture. Prolonged exposure to serious stress - known as toxic stress - can lead to lifelong health consequences. Detention of children is not a solution to the forced separation of children from their parents at the U.S. border...We must remember that immigrant children are still children...[and] children are uniquely vulnerable and are at high risk for trauma, trafficking, and violence.”

We sincerely urge those who have a voice to speak for those who do not. We urge those in authority and powerful positions to utilize their discretion and lean towards basic human decency and protect these children. What can you do? SPEAK UP. Call your Representatives and Senators urging them to fix this immediately. Call the White House urging those in charge to end this policy. Donate to organizations caring for these children.

Thank you!
